Why is it necessary to do AudioFitness Training?

Hearing happens as much in-between the ears as with the Ears. Especially our ability to understand language is largely due to central hearing functions. These functions generally peak at 20 years of age and then slowly deteriorate, exasperated by any accompanying peripheral Hearing Problem. AudioFitness training can improve and even restore the central hearing ability.

What will I do with the AT-3000 after the training is finished?

The guided training sessions will help you to understand the training and the individual tasks better. You will actually practice at your home alone. Once you achieved your age specific targets you should continue practicing maintaining the achieved and aiming for optimal values.

Aren’t Hearing Aids alone able to solve the complete hearing problem?

In many cases not. To solve a hearing problem one has to address also central hearing processing deficiencies. Exactly these are what the clients have to work on by themselves with the help of the guided training.

How does AudioFitness Training work?

With the help of the so called Audio-Trainer the client trains 8 central hearing functions every day at home. The training provides the basis to understanding speech accurately - also in background noise. To help with the training 6 – 8 consultations and evaluations in weekly intervals are provided.

What functions are being trained with AudioFitness?

The ability of directional hearing, the ability to discriminate frequency differences, or the ability to process Speech and other signals quickly. Every sound in a language has certain duration and a certain frequency. If one can’t identify duration and frequency accurately then it will be very difficult to identify and discriminate consonants and vowels correctly.

Why is it so important to improve these central auditory functions?

Because if one cannot understand all sounds clearly one has to develop a compensation strategy. It’s like speaking a foreign language where on does not understand every sound but derives the meaning from the overall context of the whole sentence. As example, take the sentence “ He hammered the .ail into the wall”. Even without hearing the first consonant it’s easy to deduce, that the missing sound is a “n” as we normally only hammering nails into the wall. However it’s not always so easy and can use up a lot of concentration if one has to do this all the time.

What are the consequences if someone is forced to process speech constantly as mentioned previously?

Such a person will avoid the noisy restaurant. He suffers more and more in the noisy office. And the more he is avoiding challenging hearing situations, the more his ability to hear in exactly such situations will deteriorate further. This vicious cycle reduces ones central auditory ability step by step further.

Who can use AudioFitness?

AudioFitness is targeting 3 specific customer groups. The 40+ who visits the ENT with the complaint of having some problems of not understanding perfectly anymore, especially in noise. But is advice, based on a conventional, peripheral, hearing assessment that he still hears good. Until now such persons have been sent away and told to come back once their hearing is sufficiently bad. But actually we could help such people already now by improving their ability to understand, as this is a problem of central hearing. The second group is the one between 55 and 60 years which are just before getting a hearing aid. Along with the Hearing Aids they can start with AudioFitness to get better and more benefit from their Hearing Aids.

The third group is the unhappy/unsuccessful Hearing Aid users who can also benefit from central hearing training by improving the central function where Hearing Aids can’t help at all. In average people get Hearing aids 10 – 15 years too late. In this period, the central hearing processing functions of the brain deteriorate more and more. However people still expect to hear with their Hearing Aids as well as 10 or 15 years ago. Even the best Hearing Aid cannot fulfill these expectations. To hear well (again) you need two things, firstly the hearing with your ears and secondly the hearing between the ears (the central hearing). As a result many users are challenged, even if the Hearing Aid is fitted and adjusted perfectly and often the shop or the Hearing Aid are being blamed for the not satisfactory results.

How was the effectiveness of AudioFitness evaluated?

The system itself was developed in cooperation with the University Hospital in Hannover, Germany. At first reference values, which proved that central hearing ability starts do gradually deteriorate at around 20 years were established. Then it was evaluated if these central abilities can be, independent of the actual age, trained. Candidates with reduced processing values were chosen, all of them still working and in average 48 years old. Already after 3 to 5 weeks of training were the participants able to reach age specific or even better values. Some even reached optimal values at the end of the training. Following was the correlation of these results to the significantly improvement in everyday listening situations and the ability to hear in noise, established.

Is it possible to fight Presbycusis just with AudioFitness Training?

Presbycusis is related to damage to the organic structure of the haircells in the cochlear and the resulting deterioration of central processing. But there are also people 60 + years old who despite near normal peripheral hearing have huge problems understanding language. This means, that the main reason of understanding language is in central processing. Of course there are also many cases where both systems are involved.

How widely is AudioFitness in use today?

Roughly 2000 centers using AudioFitness in Germany, Switzerland and Austria today, with more and more around the world. THSC is the first and only company offering this unique approach in South East Asia.

How does AudioFitness compare with more conventional Hearing Training for Adults?

Conventional Hearing training teaches people conscious approaches on how to re-learn hearing. However, most things we do in daily life, we do automatically – without consciously thinking about it. It is therefore not very useful to teach people strategies on how to hear better. We need to make the process automatic so it happens subconsciously.
